TKD is cancelled on Thursday (boo wish I'd gone last night now but I was knacked after whitby) as it's bonfire night - this means I shall be endeavouring to organise a cheap curry at seven spices in woodhouse afterwards. woo!

any takers?

Edit: bonfire will be lit at 7 and the fireworks are at 7:30

I don't know how accurate the stuff in this blog is but I have to say it rings true with what I expected and what I know from working in the direct mail industry. I suppose I'm posting it cos I get *really* tired of people who paint strikers like they're just doing it to be greedy or to piss them off without thinking of what the reasons may be.

Before I forget I thought I'd mention that it's Saturday I'm planning to go see the Burlesque and Cabaret at Whitby not Friday as I originally thought - I'd like to see Eden House to see what all the fuss is about and of course it's Grooving in Green on the Friday too. This does mean I'm in danger of missing Rhombus on the Saturday but I suspect I'll just have to live with that - I'll try and get to see some of them before popping next door.

atchooooo!

Am all burny red-eyed and sneezy again today (and was yesterday too) BAH! It's bloody October! There are no flowers! The pollen is a lie! A LIE!!!!

Weekend has been mostly sedate. I manage to have a nice cheap night on Friday - not even indulging in takeaway - and playing WOW with Daevid. Scrimptastic.

Then I woke with a strange and disquietening sense of purpose on Saturday morning at 9am. I *almost* went out for a run! Blimey. Instead I spent 2 hours tidying my bedroom. It still probably has an hour or mores worth to go but hey it was a start and I've sorted through my clothes pre-whitby. Later on we tidied the house. It was pretty epic. We even vacuumed the hall. Go us! Cleantastic.

Kath and Suz came over on Saturday night and we headed out to Wendy House. It was a good night although I didn't even do a circuit and visit the mutate room - the fair Lady Tinks was out (with Dave and the knitted hallowe'en mask she'd made him.) Elise was suitably 'henny' with glowstick necklace rather than L plates. And it was nice to catch up with Vixen and James who also hadn't been there in ages - coincitastic!

And I did not deserve the bloody hangover I had on Sunday. Given I had 5.5 pints all night. Bah! That's not really that much for me - I must be losing my touch! Felt appalling yesterday and didn't surface till 12:30 - spent the rest of the day hiding in my computer room groaning :( No Sheep for me. Talking of which - Sally and Paul have had their baby - Joshua - well done chaps! Childbirthtastic!

This week I shall mostly be policing my tidy house tutting at Alaistair and doing very little of importance! Ligtastic!

in which our heroine doesn't die in bed of a burning television

What ho!

how are *you*?

The weekend was nice. On Friday night we eschewed light night in favour of staying in trying to get warm and eating a curry. I was freezing for some reason and ended up huddled under a blanket as we watched Tokyo Gore Police much to Fuzzy and Al's amusement. Bah!

On Saturday I sorted out my DJ set for sunday and then D and I headed in to town. We made the mistake of going to Primark. I still don't 'get' the place - it's like a bomb has gone off in a bad taste factory and then they make you queue for hours to pay for flimsy scraps of material stuck together with the spit of underpaid chinese peasants. I abandoned my pink jammies after 5 minutes of standing in a non-moving queue as it was revealed the tills kept crashing. Bah. I have learnt my lesson. If I ever go in there again it'll be on a week day! If I do...
On Saturday night we headed out to the Mata Hari Club upstairs at santiago. Most pleasant! fetishman, whiteivy and co were there too - nice to catch up with them all. Nearly got a hula hoop to the teeth from one of the performers but survived intact :)

had planned a nice lazy day on Sunday. We had continental breakfast (meat! cheese! woo!) in bed whilst watching the Princess Bride. Then nodded off for a bit and were very rudely awoken by a loud electrical crackling noise coming from the telly (which had been switched off not put onto standby) which was belching smoke. panic!! the electrical burning smell was horrid and got everywhere. was afraid to leave the tv alone as it had still produced fronds of smoke some time after being switched off. eventually once I'd reassured myself it wasn't going to burst into flames from internal smouldering I had to have a bath to get the electrical smell out of my hair. still felt a need to keep checking in on the thing through out the day. even with all my windows open it was hard to shift the smell. yak.

We had tea at Fuji Hiro before heading to the club. Was relieved to get in and check that the one burnt cd I'd bought with me did work and that none of my original cds were skippy. DJing went smoothly and I can report that odd dance-floor success was achieved by Muse's Uprising even if Jack did forget to play the other Dr Who themed song after it like I'd suggested :P Of course my first non-disaterous djing was not witnessed by Paul or many of my chums so no doubt they'll just pretend it never happened :P

This week has been mostly unremarkable (well apart from shygoth getting to level 63 in wow after less than 2 weeks playing - wtf?!?) with the major exception of Fuzzy coming off his bike on Tuesday night. He's mostly unharmed but in a lot of pain from the impact of flying. poor fluff! The bike is totalled too. :(
Got called up by the Doctor's the other day and told to make an appointment as more blood tests had come back. Turns out I'm severely vitamin D deficient. bums. Whilst I eat liver and oily fish (not together - blee) I haven't really eaten them much recently but I do tend to eat a lot of eggs at times. Turns out the big killer with vitamin D though is sunlight. I need to go out and spend more time uncovered in the sunlight. What a great thing to find out in October...

orange over and out.

There's a number 10 pertition about that Guardian gagging affair that everyone's on about today:

http://petitions.number10.gov.uk/PressFreedom/

seems like a pretty important thing to get fired up about to me - in fact I'd go so far as to say it's an outrageous thing to happen in a country that has had transparency in parlimentary debate since the 18th century or longer

(in short the Guardian have been prevented from reporting on a parlimentary question today by what appears to be the company in question's solicitors - they're not even allowed to say which question they're not allowed to report on

more here:
what the guardian is not allowed to tell you.

and the guardian's article about it is here)

islands in the stream

no man is an island. unlike burley park station which was surrounded by a random wide, deep flood. someone had constructed a stepping stone (it really was that bad and as wide as the whole road) and another half hearted one that sank when you stood on it so once I was over (via some impressive early morning leaping) I found an abandoned formica desk top and constructed a jetty which was more effective than the wonky stepping stone. engineering at 7:30am...

Weekend was marvellous but marred by a sudden cold which cost me a day off sick on monday due to puffyheaditis. Flock was most enjoyable - although I can't actually remember what occurred! Slippery Belle was heaving and actually ran through til past 2 with an active dance floor (tends to die off about 1 most times) - the bone shakers were a definite highlight - they have the whole comedy burlesque troupe thing off to a T - go see them at whitby (along with Bella and Lexi :D) - they did a brilliant old lady bingo routine and a rocky horror one :D. I may have suggested to Bella that she have ulfilias turn the maid role into a Jeeves-style butler role at a future event - she even got him on stage and told the audience - hehe I'm ~ewil~

INCOMING: I appear to be djing at Black Sheep on Sunday - come along and support an orange! An orange who will probably stick to stuff she has on original cd only :P

just brain dumping - excuse the stream of conciousness whinging...

I went to the doctors a while back cos I was concerned about a number of symptoms. rapid weight gain, tardy weight loss, strong nausea when hungry in the late afternoon (but not in the mornings), heart palpatations (or adrenal rushes maybe) during times when nothing stressful or energetic was occuring, occasional sudden over-powering fatigue that doesn't seem connected to sleep patterns or owt.

The history to the weight issues were that I took 3.5 months off taekwondo up to around this time last year - a time of high stress when I was selling the house, moving and dealing with the financial dificulties of the club - and during this time I put on a stone and a half. a stone and a half in 14-5 weeks! I managed to lose half a stone of this when I got my nintendo wii (or possibly when I got the nonovirus in the spring - can't quite remember) but the other stone remained. Over the summer I managed - for the first time in years, to motivate myself to knuckle down and control my eating and was doing very well at being on a 1500 calorie diet on weekdays - eating a metric tonne of fruit and cutting out the crap - with less strict eating at the weekends but still not *too* bad. I did this for over 2 months. and I lost...1 or 2 pounds. I have of course now completely lost all motivation to diet and my daily calorie intake is back up to (or possibly exceeding) what it was before the diet. the 1-2 pounds are now back on and I can feel myself beginning to inflate.

soooo. back to the doctors - I got a set of blood tests done to see if anything was wrong. I mean it shouldn't *be* normal to put on a stone and a half in 3.5 months just cos you're missing a couple of hours of excercise per week should it? Went in to get the results today. I'm perfectly healthy apart from a marked vitamin B deficiency. I fully admit I don't eat a lot of veg - I'm a fruit person rather than a veg person - so I asked the dr what the vitamin b was in. his first answer... beans. BEANS? I have a full tin of 3 bean soup most days at work - I've just spent the last few days eating a giant beef and bean casserole I made. I eat a lot of beans. I *love* beans! wtf? how am I deficient in this?? he's perscribed me with some folic acid tablets. then I have to go back in 3 months. I have to say I'm confused as to how I'm deficient in something I eat all the time...

/waffle

My brain has spent the past few days persuading me I should become a Maths teacher.
How odd.
I've even started looking at PCGEs and SKEs.
Odder still

Doubt it will happen - kids see right through me and I'm not sure I can wield the appropriate level of authority.
Plus it'd be a fairly hefty pay cut at first. Not that pay is that important above a certain level in a job that gives you job satisfaction.

Hmm

Rambling down memory lane

It occurs to me that this weekend is my (and my chum Johnny's) 20th anniversary of being in Leeds (although I probably didn't meet him for a week or so as he was on my course)

Leeds! 20 years! blimey! It was still the 80s when we got here! I know people that weren't even born then! The phono was still "le phonographique" Nelson Mandella was still in jail (I know this cos the Union gave out free beer on the day they released him) The Sisters of Mercy were still producing new recorded output! There was no real internet! I regularly wore tie dye - on purpose. I mostly had brown hair (with a red streak)
*feels old*

When I left Birmingham it was a dump - there was no goth scene - only a metal one - in the interim years it has become an awful lot better especially in the public open space department - so many fountains now :D But I still think Leeds has the advantage and the better scene - I still reallly love it here and couldn't imagine for a moment moving away - especially from the many many wonderful people I've bothered over the years :D

How very inappropriate and ironic that I'm having a weekend in! Ah well - it reminds me I should invite Johnny* round to join us in Civilised (and frugal as the wine is pre-bought) drinking tomorrow night - if anyone else - especially old codgers like me - would like to join me then do so!

*or Def Johnny F as he seemed to be known at the time... hey it was the 80s - things were different then.

Into the mud, scum queen!

Hello! How are you?

I rather enjoyed the Smurf final floorshow gig on Friday - it was somewhat immense - they played for about 2 and a half hours and i stood on a table and sang along loudly for most of that. The club was packed and everyone seemed transfixed. :) Flock itself was a bit of a blur afterwards - I'm sure there must have been embarassing dancing. There were definitely Mexicans present. In hats. I believe one of them picked me up and sat me on the bar - some sort of personal life goal of his I think. :D As it was my last night out in a while I thought I'd enjoy it ;)

Wasn't too hungover on Saturday tided up and ligged around til eddy_ and pyropaws came round for tea and boardgames. Sneakily won at Munchkin. Watched Tropic Thunder which I rather enjoyed - I suspect I'm a fan of Ben Stiller... the shame... Tom Cruise's dance at the end amused me far too much - he's not allowed to do stuff that makes me hate him less! Reminds me that I need to get a copy of Risky Business on DVD though...

For some reason I have yet to ascertain, I was up at 9:30 on Sunday morning despite drinking wine and cider and being up till 3am the previous night. Oh well - WOWfest time! People came round, we played the game of munchkin that wouldn't die (it lasted *hours* and Lee won) and then watched The Man with Two Brains - such a fine fine film :D

Monday bought a freebie visit to the cinema (followed by a walk home - see - still being frugal!) to see District 9. We missed the very beginning of the film so I don't know if there's an explaination about the circumstances at the beginning of the film or not. It was, all in all, a good film but I have to say I'm getting fed up of directors using hand-held shakey cam. I had to spend the majority of the first half of the film with my eyes shut and even then I actually nearly gipped at one point. Thankfully the plot was quite listenable but even so... I only stopped feeling sick halfway home!

I think the crazy wobbly cam thing is a bit of a lazy technique in film-making - if a percentage of your audience is actually rendered ill or uncomfortable by your film you can claim it's the exciting or scary content that's doing it - this was the case with the excorcist where serveral of the early scenes induced motion sickness in the susceptable and it was presented as people's reactions to the subject matter. it wasn't - when I first saw it I was rather embarrased to slope out of the cinema cos I felt ill (I wasn't used to the fact that it was just motion sickness and I should just cover my eyes and ride it out) because I thought people might think I was leaving cos it was scary - which it wasn't! it's not necessary to cut film this way to present a hectic and 'on the fly' feel to a film - it's managed perfectly well in many films such as 28 Days Later (and conversely not well in 28 weeks later where they over use the technique artlessly) without inducing nausea! bah! cinematography rant over.

I reckon I saved at least £40 quid over the weekend, possibly more, by staying in - am currently being quite good at spending less generally. yay!

there you are - that's a big bunch of boring whiffle for your delectation. enjoy.

frugality is the new black

Am feeling rather smug having just used the word 'duplicitous' in a conversation. Yes, yes my day to day life is rather sad and lacking excitement :P

This weekend marks the beginning of my hermit-like behaviour. People will be seeing a lot less of me as I really have to knuckle down to reduce my outgoings. I have the payments on the 10k loan I took out for the club which are about £230 plus I need to reduce my giant overdraft so that I have it available as wiggle space if I ever need it for club emergencies. This means after Flock tonight (WOO FLOCK!!) I'm unlikely to be out for the rest of the month. Including missing Slippery Belle, Heather's birthday and Wendyhouse.

Boo!

I foresee much home entertainment being required. Have eddy_ and pyropaws over for boardgames and films on Saturday and I can see myself playing a lot of wow and watching a lot of CSI on the BT Box. That said I've spent £20 on train tickets down to see D next weekend as I can't expect him to do all the visiting as he's hardly flush with cash either. Plus I get to see Wols at the Raptor Centre. Woo!

ah well - no point complaining - I've been partying like a beast for a number of years so a few months of hermitude won't kill me. hey I'll still be at whitby and I have a couple of gigs to look forward to.

In vaguely related news the insurance stuff is mostly here - new telly is way more plasticy and smaller looking than the previous one despite still being a 32" sony - makes me realise what a bargainous thing of beauty the old one was. I sold my unlocked boxed replacement Nokia 6300 for £70 on ebay - my first ebay sale ever - it went suprisingly quickly and hopefully everything has gone smoothly with the transaction. Given that ebay is the reason I'm called Sarah Orange* (I needed a user name to bid on taxidermy that I never won and everything else I tried was taken) it's quite odd that it's taken me 8 years to get round to selling something on there.

* *wonders what she was called before then...?*
